Barneveld Tornado
At approximately 12:50 a.m., June 8, 1984, quarter-mile wide F5 tornado touched down killing 9 and injuring approximately 200 of its 584 residents. The severe
thunderstorm that preceeded the tornado knocked out the electricity to the village, including the tornado sirens, preventing any possibility of warning. The devastation
included 93 homes demolished, 64 homes damaged. Of the 18 village businesses, 17 were gone. The library, municipal building, fire station, bank and post office; destroyed. Our church and two others were also victims of the tornado's destructive path. The total cost of the damage, extending beyond village limits, is estimated at approximately $40 million.
